Conyers, Georgia eighth-grade social studies teacher David Yancey has been in the news lately for his wrap up songs. To help his students retain lessons, Yancey rewrites the lyrics to popular songs to summarize the information from each unit.
Yancey’s repertoire includes “I’m Coach Yancey,” based on Iggy Azalea’s “I’m So Fancy;” “Hello from the Cherokee,” based on Adele’s “Hello;” “Mad and Losing,” a lesson about Ulysses S. Grant and the Civil war based on Migos’ “Bad and Boujee;” and more. Former pupils have told the teacher that they still remember and use his lyrics years later.
At Elevate Teachers, we’re always excited to see educators being recognized on a national scale. We hope to continue to see more teachers celebrated in the news for finding creative new ways to encourage their students.
